On 29 November 2010 I was appointed Creative Producer for a 10 day series of arts and cultural activities taking place in Canberra’s city centre. Initiated by the Centenary of Canberra, funded by the ACT Government and Canberra CBD Limited, and given the illustrious title of You Are Here, the festival was planned to run from 10-20 March 2011.
This gave myself and the festival crew (Yolande Norris, Anthony Arblaster and 12 other burning hot coals plucked out of heaven’s oven) had approximately 100 days to curate and produce a brand new festival from scratch. Which we did. And it was extraordinary.
You Are Here’s Overhead Projector Jam.
Next! Performing at Cut and Paste at the Old Fitz in Sydney this Sunday. I am on a bill curated by the most superior Phil Spencer, alongside Jo Erskine, Dr Brown (from the United Kingdoms and States) and, most exciting for me, JANE GRIMLEY. As in, Jane Grimley behind 2009’s sprawling cross-disciplinary sensory-over-fucking-load The Witness in the Wall and 2010’s genuinely risky lettuce-destroying inspirational sermon Faster Lady Godiva Faster!, who is also co-director (alongside Gareth Hart and Ben Packer) of the 2011 Crack Theatre Festival? YES, THAT IS WHO I AM TALKING ABOUT. Get excited.
I’ll be performing a new mix assembled specially for the occasion, which I am thinking of calling Your first day at Dickson Chemist. So far, it’s got slices from mine and barb barnett’s A Christian Guide to Sexual Intimacy, Steve Reich’s Come Out, some pharmacy notes and of course a little J. Grey / P. Swayze.
Cut and Paste is 8pm Sunday 27 March at the Old Fitz, cnr Cathedral and Dowling streets in Woolloomooloo. $10 for awesome, yo.
